To give you a route you asked for, we use your start, end, date/time, and preference, and we send locations to mapping providers (TomTom geocoding and routing; OpenStreetMap, Overture, and elevation data; map tiles). We need this to provide that service. Some of those providers process data outside the UK, including in the EEA and the US. Where the UK has a data bridge we rely on it; otherwise we send only what is needed to plan that walk.
We keep an unlinked log of resolved places, coordinates, and route shapes so we can operate and improve the service (legitimate interests). That log is not tied to this browser and is not removed by Delete. Email us if you object; we may not be able to isolate one walk from that log.
This browser stores a random id, your privacy choices, and appearance. Saving Essential only or any other choice sets a session cookie so we can recognise this browser. Turning both optional choices off on this page withdraws and clears that cookie.
On a phone-sized screen we ask before using GPS. If you allow it, we use it in this session to centre the map, set Start, and show where you are while a route is on the map. If you plan a walk from that Start, those coordinates go with the plan like any other start.
On a wider screen we ask a geolocation provider for an approximate city from your IP so the map can open. We do not keep your IP address. We may keep a short-lived one-way hash of it so the same lookup is not repeated. The provider sees your IP.
Save route history is off unless you tick it. We then store your plans and typed searches for this browser, and recent searches on this device.
Save analytics is on unless you turn it off. We then store which controls you use and whether a plan worked, tied to this browser's random id. Those events do not include coordinates. We may also store a hashed IP, country, and coarse browser info with that id.
Feedback from the menu is stored as you typed it, not linked to this browser, and is not in export or delete. Email us if you want a specific message removed.
Delete removes this browser's consents, saved analytics, fingerprint, and saved plans. It does not remove the unlinked plan log, feedback, or operational records. Backups may hold a copy until they expire. Export downloads a JSON file of what we hold for this browser. Optional history and saved analytics are kept until you delete them or withdraw. Unlinked plan logs and feedback are not deleted on a timer.
We do not sell your information or use it for advertising. This service is not directed at children under 13.
We do not use your information for solely automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects. You can withdraw the optional choices in the app, export or delete this browser's records, ask us by email to correct or restrict what we hold for this browser, and object to legitimate-interests processing by emailing us. If you are unhappy, email us, complain to the ICO, or if you are in the EEA to your local data protection authority .
Results are approximate. Map data can miss construction, closures, and other changes on the ground. Do not use Vompyr as your only guide, and not in an emergency.
Longer and rural walks can take more time or fail.
The service is free and provided as-is. We do not promise it will always be available or correct. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything the law does not allow us to limit.
Do not overload or scrape the service.
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, this does not take away protections you have where you live.
